Caracaras

Caracaras are native to South America and parts of Mexico. They are split into two different groups, the ‘northern’ and ‘southern’ crested caracara, but are usually classified as a single species.

There are 10 species of Cara cara, There were 11 but the ‘Guadalupe caracara’ is now extinct.

Caracara’s are the bird version of Raccoons as they are known for raiding bins for food on theFalkland Islands!

The striated Caracara are the only bird not to grow feathers on their crops.

Many Mexicans honour the caracara as their national symbol, although a Golden Eagle actuallyappears on the flag of Mexico.

The bird was sacred to the Aztecs. And a caracara will face off against
a vulture twice its size!
